With relations between the races in the United States strained, it is important that the country, particularly the South, know what the Afro-American really wants. Believing that statements from leading blacks might throw light on this question, the publisher asked that this book be written with the stipulation that equal representation be given to conservative, liberal, and radical opinion and that the contributors not go to extremes that they could not justify- publisher.
