Inkunabeln waren in Format, Typografie und Illustration zunächst vom Erscheinungsbild mittelalterlicher Handschriften geprägt, das sich mit der technischen und ökonomischen Entwicklung seit Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts zum modernen Buchdruck wandelte. Ihre Herstellung erfolgte durch namentlich genannte Drucker, die sie auch vertrieben. Inkunabeln sind Zeugnisse für den Beginn der technisch gestützten Verbreitung von Schriftgut in Europa und stellen heute wertvolles Kulturgut dar.
