There are 12 essays by: William Hickling Prescott, Caleb Cushing, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Bancroft, John Lothrop Motley, Washington Irving, Charles Francis Adams, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, George William Curtis, Francis Parkman, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Some of the essays are published here for the first time in book form. For example, Bancroft's The Last Moments of Eminent Men is BAL 679. Washington Irving's essay [The Northmen] is cited in BAL (volume 5, page 91). Lowell's contribution [Shakespeare Once More] is also in BAL (volume 6, page 94).
