Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Conditions of Intelligence traces artificial intelligence from its technical foundations to its philosophical, cultural, and political consequences. Beginning with the optimisation paradigm that drives modern AI, and its theoretical limits, the book asks what intelligence actually is, and what current systems demonstrably are not.The argument moves through four registers: the genuine capabilities and documented failure modes of large language models; the philosophical obstacles to alignment, among them value pluralism, Arrow's impossibility, and the hard problem of consciousness; the practical techniques that address part of those obstacles but not all; and the broader conditions, historical, cultural, geopolitical, in which AI development is taking place.Drawing on thinkers from Isaiah Berlin and Hannah Arendt to Cajal, Chollet, and Quine, and examining traditions from Shinto ethics to Ubuntu philosophy, the book insists that AI is not only a technical problem. It is a question about what kind of intelligence we are building, for whom, under whose governance, and at what cost to labour, to the epistemic commons, and to the physical world. The answer is not yet known. The question is urgent. 240 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Volume One of: A Calculus of Representation. This two-volume calculus of representation develops a framework carried since the 1980s: a notation that keeps what there is and how it is grasped on the page at the same time, instead of collapsing either into the other. The first volume sets the notation down, and finds it already present - unremarked, and six centuries apart - in Ockham and in Frege. The second sets it in motion, and asks what a record of an inquiry still holds once the inquiry has changed its mind. They are taught apart, to different ends, by different people: Ockham on a thing and the concept that covers it, Frege on an object and the way it is given to us. The claim made here is that they are one failure seen from two sides.Think of representation as a relation running from what there is to how it is grasped. Such a relation can fail to be a one-to-one correspondence in exactly two directions, and each direction already has a name. Fail in the first and you have a universal. Fail in the second and you have a sense. What this book builds is a notation that keeps both on the page at once instead of collapsing them into one - and it gives assertion a place of its own, as a third thing that is neither truth nor content. It derives nothing. There is no proof system here and no transformation rules. What it offers instead is the ability to state ordinary difficulties that are otherwise merely reportable: the man who takes the morning star and the evening star for two different bodies, the reader gripped by a novel, the science that turned out to be wrong. The usual apparatus leaves two options - convict somebody of inconsistency, or let the object take the damage. A notation that separates the two places lets one say what happened.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Every convenience is a small trade, and no one ever asked you to sign forit. The dishwasher took the drudgery. The calculator took the arithmetic. The map took your sense of where you are. Each was a fair bargain on itsown terms. Now a machine offers to take the thinking, the writing, thedeciding - and the same fair bargain arrives at the one workshop that madeyou who you are. This is a book about what goes missing when nothing is hard, and about theolder, more stubborn idea that some difficulty is not a cost to be cut but acraft to be kept. Where do you want to hold on to the friction.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. It is 2026, and a language model can generate a lexer, a type checker, and a working compiler in seconds. So why learn to build them by hand? Because a generated artifact is an assertion - and an assertion you cannot evaluate is not knowledge, it is a hope with good syntax. The value was never in the typing. This book carries one language - Lark, the Lambda Affine Resource Kernel - from a real instruction set to a machine-checked proof that its meaning is sound, treating the hardware, the theory, and the proof as a single argument. You begin at the silicon and build upward through lexer, parser, type system, interpreter, and optimizer, to a code generator that runs Lark as native code on an affordable Raspberry Pi Pico 2/2W. Theory is earned, not assumed: Hindley-Milner inference, affine ownership, and traits, each introduced when the implementation needs it. And the book teaches the discipline that code-generating tools demand - an interpreter that defines what a program means, a differential-testing harness that says which back end is wrong, a type-safety theorem that bounds what any transformation may do. And then it turns that machinery on itself: the finished compiler is fuzzed, the tests are checked with planted bugs, and even the proof kernel is attacked until it gives up its own flaws - because a guarantee is worth exactly as much as the adversary it has survived. For the technically literate programmer who has always meant to understand what is under their language and never found the entry point. It assumes familiarity with Python or C and basic data structures - but not a line of compiler theory. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Worldless Machine asks what the current moment of AI actually is. Not technically but historically and philosophically. Drawing on Hannah Arendt's distinction between labour, work, and action, it argues that the emergence of large language models is not a rupture but a culmination: the endpoint of two centuries in which the consumption cycle progressively dismantled the conditions under which durable, world-building work was possible. The book proceeds in three movements. The first examines the hard case, whether AI systems understand, and argues that the question calls for legislation rather than discovery: an explicit, revisable, publicly accountable commitment about what shall count. The second traces the invisible labour that produces AI, and what it reveals about the system it produces. The third surveys the historical movements that resisted the same condition: the Luddites, the utopian socialists, the Arts and Crafts practitioners, the Scandinavian cooperative traditions. Each was absorbed. The central danger AI represents is not destruction but simulation: a system that presents itself as making in the relevant sense, at the moment when genuine making has been most thoroughly prepared for replacement.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -If you've written code and wrestled with algorithms, you know the satisfaction of making a machine do exactly what you tell it. But something fundamental is shifting in how we work with computers, and the best way to understand that shift is to build your way through it.This book explores computation's evolution from predictable algorithms to adaptive systems through hands-on projects that demand both technical skill and conceptual understanding. You won't just read about virtual machines or language models. You'll implement them, experiment with them, and develop intuition about when each approach makes sense. Each project builds on the last, creating a learning journey from mechanical precision to fluid reasoning. The project-based approach means you'll spend more time building than reading, more time experimenting than memorizing. You'll encounter challenges that require creative problem-solving, debug systems that behave in unexpected ways, and gradually develop the kind of judgment that only comes from direct engagement with computational systems. The book assumes working knowledge of Python and C at an intermediate level, along with familiarity with basic computer science concepts, but the real prerequisite is willingness to learn through making. If you're ready to expand beyond writing code to reasoning about systems (and to do so by building rather than just studying), this book is your guide. 756 pp. Englisch.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Two ordinary moments from a working week. A function ships clean, and months later fails on a case its type checker looked straight at and passed. A service that shipped clean a year ago, untouched since, will no longer run - nothing in it moved; everything under it did. The first says a rule can never cover every case it governs; the second, that an artefact can never be finished, only kept in being. This is a book about those two refusals and its single claim of them: neither ever closes. One opening is logical, a limit no procedure escapes, sharpened here into a theorem; the other is temporal, the upkeep of software having the form of labor - consumed in the doing, setting nothing down for good. Held apart as two lenses, they are shown to touch at one place a programmer can point to: the commit in which a custom kept by hand hardens into a rule a machine enforces. And the enclosure settles nothing: it moves the unruled margin rather than removing it, opening a fresh frontier at the new rule's edge. From that join follows an account of what a maker does where nothing comes to rest - not finishing, which no one can do, but staffing the unfinishable in the open.
