The 1940 May issue of Picture Post, a popular British photojournalistic magazine that ran from 1938 to 1957, a pioneer in its form. An immediate success, it sold over a million copies a week after only two months.Founded by Edward Hulton, it held a liberal, anti-Fascist, and populist view, and it actively campaigned against the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. Edited by Stefan Lorant, Vol. 7 No. 8. Published during war time, this issue includes pictorial features of the invasion, the cabinet's crises, with insight on 'The World as Hitler Would Like to Make It,' and 'the war up-close'. Including a special feature 'Ready French: Lesson Two,' and a cartoon by David Low titled 'All Behind You Winston. Articles discuss the contemporary events during the war.Fully illustrated throughout in black and white. Numerous advertisements. Including a cross-word. In the original publisher's binding in illustrated wraps. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and chipping to the wraps, puncture marks to the spine. First 47 issues of monthly magazine running consecutively from Volume 1, no. 1 to Volume 8, no. 5 (July 1937- May 1941); also Volume 9, no. 4 (October 1941, no. 52 overall) and Volume 19, no. 1 (July 1946, no. 109 overall). Paper covers with colour illustrations - each depicting a man, a woman, and a small Scottish Terrier dog in various situations and periods - by Walter Trier, who designed the magazine until 1949. Consecutive run wrapped up in very old brown paper and string. Occasional minor marks and foxing and slight wear to spine, otherwise all in near fine condition, clean and barely touched. Lilliput was a small-format British monthly magazine of humour, short stories, photographs and the arts, founded in 1937 by the photojournalist Stefan Lorant. Contributors included H. E. Bates, Sachverell Sitwell, Nancy Mitford, Ronald Searle, Aleister Crowley, and many others of the period's heavy hitters. Lilliput was also known for its tasteful nude photography; it was absorbed into Men Only in 1960, which later became pornographic.
