Bound in the publisher's half vellum; externally rather worn, with the vellum heavily discoloured and grubby, with losses and wear at the tail of the spine and occasionally throughout. The spine is cocked. The cloth covered boards are generally smart, with just occasional rubbing and wear, and one or two instances of fraying at the edges. The binding is tender, in particular at the hinges, with the cords exposed. Reinforcement to the gutter verso of the frontispiece. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional spots. Illustrated with three maps, and seventeen plates including folding examples; collated and complete. A limited edition, edited by Lord Amherst of Hackney and Basil Thomson, and illustrated throughout.

Edges untrimmed and lightly dust soiled. Laid paper. Numerous unopened pages throughout both volumes. Light foxing on the endpapers of the volumes, otherwise clean copies. Volume I features 17 illustrations and three maps. Volume II contains 16 illustrations. Please note that Volume II is missing one of the two fold out maps; the other map has damage to the illustrations, so a good reading set but not a good fit for collectors. As a note of provenance, these volumes formerly belonged to Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who has served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. David's bookplate is on the pastedown.
