The memoirs of William Henry Beveridge, a British economist, noted progressive and social reformer best known for his 1942 report, "Social Insurance and Allied Services" (remembered as "The Beveridge Report") which became the basis for Britain's post-World War II welfare state under the Labour government elected in 1945. An authority on unemployment insurance from early in his career, Beveridge served under Winston Churchill on the Board of Trade as Director of Churchill's newly created labour exchanges. This is a very good copy of the First American edition, without dust jacket. The contents are fine.

Original Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The boards have a little surface blistering to the cloth at the right edge of the front panel and down the right edge of the rear panel next to the spine. There is a little surface scratching to the bottom corner of the front panel but otherwise only a little light wear to the edges and corners. The page edges have some browning with a few brown spots to the fore edges and bottom edges. Small creases to the top corners of the last few pages and a little browning to the pages with light spotting to the endpapers but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. No jacket. First printing.

Binding is firm throughout with minor thumb-marking. Boards have light edge wear with minor corner bumping. Mild crushing to spine, with occasional markings overall. Unclipped jacket has light edgewear with tears and creasing. Heavy tanning to spine and edges. Notable rubbing and marking all over. Slight droplets to rear panel.
