In 2011 Michel Aberson, Maria Cristina Biella, Massimiliano Di Fazio and Manuela Wullschleger (two Italians and two Swiss, two archaeologists and two historians of antiquity) met in Geneva at the Fondation Hardt pour l'étude de l'Antiquite classique and decided to undertake a challenging project togeth…er: to organize three conferences on the peoples of central Italy, taking into consideration the key milestones in their history, from their independence, through their relations with Rome and ending with the (re)construction of their identities within the Roman world.Underpinning the project, which immediately found the support of many colleagues and institutions, was the idea of bringing historians, archaeologists, linguists and specialists of Latin literature together to collaboratively create a comprehensive picture of these significantly multifaceted and sometimes even conflicting topics. The present volume is the outcome of the third conference of the series E pluribus unum? Italy from the Pre-Roman fragmentation to the Augustan Unity, held at the University of Oxford in October 2016; it deals with the specific moments of conscious rediscovery of conquered peoples' contribution to Roman culture from the late Republic and during the Empire. These influences can be recognized particularly during the Late Republic and Augustan period, and the final outcome is the formation of a connective tissue, which can be described as the cement of the "unaccomplished identity" of ancient Italy.The volume investigates the issue from different perspectives in order to avoid the adoption of a Romanocentric perspective.

Baumer et du Dr. Domenico Marino, Archeologue Directeur de l'Office territorial de Crotone et…Sila de la Surintendance pour le patrimoine archeologique de la Calabre. Le projet prevoit, outre les recherches archeologiques, une exploration des sources ecrites citant Crotone, textes anciens et textes de voyageurs. Un premier volet des travaux a vu l'organisation d'un colloque international en 2012 a l'Universite de Geneve, reunissant des specialistes, philologues, historiens de l'Antiquite, archeologues, pour discuter du voyage et des voyageurs a Crotone. Si la majeure partie des contributions s'interesse aux voyageurs des temps modernes, les visiteurs de l'Antiquite sont aussi evoques, mythiques ou reels, et leurs motivations analysees et comparees a celles des touristes plus recents: on constate ainsi que la reputation de Pythagore a attire des personnages prestigieux a Crotone de l'Antiquite a nos jours et que la mauvaise reputation de Crotone, attribuee souvent aux voyageurs nord-europeens du Grand Tour, est en fait deja attestee a l'epoque imperiale romaine. Cela dit, les recits des explorateurs intrepides qui se sont rendus dans cette contree reputee hostile et dangereuse n'en sont donc que plus precieux. Les contributions de cet ouvrage en presentent quelques-uns, en questionnant leurs motivations et leur rapport au voyage, tout en elargissant le theme par l'evocation des voyageurs antiques, permettant ainsi une mise en perspective des raisons du voyage a Crotone.
