3/4 Leather. Condition: VG+. Montaigne's essays, critical edition by Chas. Louandre. A very fine edition in 4 volumes, bound in 3/4 black leather over elegantly marbled green and olive boards. Spines divided into compartments by 7 double-line gilt rules. Title and volume number in second compartment. All edges speckled in red. A… remarkable copy, being previously owned by Lillie Hitchcock-Coit, the Firefighting Lady of San Francisco. She is also responsible for the well known landmark, the Coit Tower, in that city. Her name appears stamped in gilt in the lowest band of the spine of each volume, matching the style of the title and volume number. Whether she had the set bound or had her name added we do not know. Unusual provenance for a great work of Literature; an important copy. Some slight rubbing, small chips at top of spine of two volumes, very minor browning here and there throughout. All volumes tight and solid. A very handsome set. Text and commentary in French.
