It quickly garnered the services of renowned preachers from around the country. T. De Witt Talmadge, one of the most distinguished and influential preachers and public speakers of his day took on the job of editor, and through his guidance and that of Spurgeon, the periodical quickly grew in circulation. In its pages the news was covered with an eye to the application of scriptural relevance. In 1890, Dr. Louis Klopsch, who had recently arrived from Germany, bought the periodical and extended its influence to Christian families and also expanded the magazine's organization to include charitable operations. Klopsch and the "Christian Herald" did much work among the poor of the inner cities. The Mission Bowery is famous for its efforts on behalf of indigent persons , not only of New York City, but around the world.
