Il a été tiré spécialement pour la Société des Bibliophiles et Iconophiles de Belgique 80 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande avec les eaux-fortes originales en deux états le 2e tiré en bistre avec remarque. EXEMPLAIRE N°6 IMPRIMÉ SPÉCIALEMENT POUR MONSIEUR JOSSE ALLARD (1868-1931) banquier et homme d'affaires belge. Tirage de tête seul à contenir deux états des eaux-fortes. Il a en outre été tiré 200 exemplaires sur Vélin sans la suite des eaux-fortes. L'ouvrage est illustré de 29 eaux-fortes, protégées sous serpente, et 36 lettrines par l'artiste-peintre, dessinateur, aquarelliste, graveur et lithographe belge Louis Benoît Joseph Titz, né à Bruges le 24 juin 1859 et mort en 1932 à Bruxelles, qui a su magnifiquement rendre l'atmosphère des petites ruelles de Bruges surplombées par l'imposant beffroi : la couverture, la vignette de titre, 3 en-tête pour le triptyque Le Rêve / L'Amour / L'Action, 3 culs-de-lampe, et 21 planches hors-texte à pleine page. Notre exemplaire contient également la suite des 29 eaux-fortes, en bistre, avec remarque. Franc-maçon fort actif à Bruxelles, Louis Titz fut membre du cercle Kumris. Après des études de peinture à l'Académie de Bruxelles, il produit une oeuvre post-impressionniste de portraitiste et paysagiste. Il peint des visages de femmes, représente des intérieurs et des vues urbaines. Il a également réalisé des affiches et des illustrations pour des livres de bibliophiles. Magnifique première édition illustrée de ce chef-d'oeuvre de Georges Rodenbach (1855-1898) dont l'édition originale a paru en 1897 chez Charpentier, comme une sorte d'écho à son Bruges-la-morte (1892). Dans une veine plus réaliste que symboliste, cette fois, le texte relate les débats qui animent la ville autour des partisans du projet Bruges-port-de-mer ou Zeebruges et les défenseurs d'une ville d'art destinée à l'élite de l'humanité. Le poète craint que le développement du port commercial contribue à détruire le patrimoine et l'esprit médiéval de Bruges, comme ce fut en partie le cas de Gand, en proie à l'industrialisation galopante.

Paper size 49 x 34 cm, size of engraving ca. 34 x 24 cm. The engravings bear a title and a date in the plate. The idea of the artist was to ill…ustrate the devastations brought over Belgium during the First World War. As he had already made before the war 6 engravings depicting typical Belgian town views, he revisited these places during 1915 and 1916 and made the same views, this time showing the results of war devastation. Louvain, Dixmude , Ypres , Dinant , Namur and Haecht are represented here. Missing are both the pre-war and war views of Ypres and Namur (4 plates).
