Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. S. J. Loxton (illustrator). "Also the Travels, Adventures, and Discoveries Of Captain John H.Speke, Captain Richard F.Burton, Captain James W.Grant, Sir Samuel And Lady Baker, And Other Distinguished Explorers". A 19th-century historical account (circa 1890) detailing major British explorations in Africa. It covers Stanley's search for Livingstone, the Nile source hunts, and other expeditions. In very good smart dark red bevel-edged boards, with gilt bust of Stanley to front with gilt bust of native above and black decorative palms and laurel and shield and spears to spine with gilt title field and dark titles. The boards are covered with plastic sleeve that could be removed. They are flat and quite clean and a little loose and wobbly from cracked hinge. The pale yellow end papers are only lightly marked; the gusset of the front end papers have split (later editions are believed to have marbled end papers). The text block has twelve coloured plates printed by lithography, plus one frontispiece and title page. The pages are firmly attached and even, with gilt cut edges. The prelims, end page, last few pages, the first few pages of Chapter One and the page edges are lightly foxed. The gusset between the title page and frontispiece is cracked. Very good condition. No dedications etc. Without jacket. Very heavy. Please contact us for cost of shipping. Rare.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. 147 pages (complete). A contentedly gently aging copy. The boards are contented. They have some scuffing, marks and wear. They are also comforting. Within, the pages have age-related tanning and marks. Nonetheless, the pages are benign, thrilling, assured, generous, more than competent, still boyish. fk.
