Ambos resultaron tener mucho en común: nunca parecían cansarse de las tareas de gobierno, de leer el incesante caudal de papeles de Estado o de escuchar casi inmóviles durante horas de larguísimas audiencias. Profundamente piadosos, tío y sobrino estaban convencidos de que les había sido encomendada la misión de gobernar por el bien de su dinastía, su fe y sus súbditos. En un principio el Rey Prudente preparó al archiduque para la corte de su hijo y heredero, de modo que Alberto fue nombrado cardenal y se inició en el arte del gobierno como virrey de Portugal. Sin embargo, por un inesperado giro en los acontecimientos el monarca cambió de planes y decidió que Alberto colgase los hábitos para casarse con su hija mayor, la infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, que recibió los Países Bajos meridionales como dote. Mediante esta cesión, el rey esperaba poner fin a la revuelta holandesa y reunir aquellas provincias bajo el gobierno habsbúrgico y el catolicismo romano. El siguiente paso sería asegurarse de que Alberto resultara elegido emperador del Sacro Imperio. A través de su investigación sobre el reinado de Alberto, Luc Duerloo ofrece una lectura novedosa y completa de los acontecimientos internacionales de aquel momento.
