Se gli storici dell'arte hanno dato contributi numerosi allo studio di questa realtà, meno attivi sono stati gli studiosi di storia economica, busine…ss e management. Salvo rare eccezioni, manca un'indagine sulla fabbrica e sui processi interni all'azienda vetraia, che, pur se caratterizzata come "artistica", è comunque insieme coordinato di attività e processi produttivi. Ne deriva una difficoltà ad evidenziare i meccanismi taciti alla base della creazione del valore di questa antica tradizione produttiva, e parallelamente a comprendere la natura della crisi strutturale di lungo periodo che caratterizza il settore (al di là delle drammatiche crisi congiunturali recenti, dal Covid alla crisi del metano). Il libro utilizza un approccio di storia orale, e si basa sulle testimonianze di quattro persone, con una serie di lunghe e reiterate interviste. In particolare, il volume si caratterizza come un'opera "a tre mani e quattro voci", basandosi sui racconti degli ex direttori di produzione di due delle più importanti aziende muranesi (Giovanni Toso alla Barovier & Toso e Lucio Moretti alla Venini), un maestro vetraio (Livio Serena, con esperienze in varie aziende), un tecnico degli impianti (Giovanni Fiammengo, dalla Ulderico Moretti alla Effetre). La finalità non è quella di descrivere in modo esaustivo le dinamiche relative alla lavorazione del vetro, bensì quella di offrire una lettura di alcuni aspetti del settore attraverso le esperienze e le riflessioni di soggetti che hanno lungamente operato in esso. Il libro vuole infatti porre al centro le storie di mestieri e fornaci, invertendo il tradizionale ruolo tra raccolta e restituzione di dati che solitamente caratterizza le pubblicazioni accademiche: solo dopo le storie dei testimoni, infatti, gli autori si soffermano a fornire alcuni spunti di riflessione nell'ottica degli studi di management. Il libro presenta poi due appendici. La prima offre una serie di materiali audiovisivi accessibili mediante codice QR, dedicati ad attività e operazioni, nella convinzione che tra il "dire" e il "fare" ci sia un importante livello intermedio nella comprensione di un comparto ad alte conoscenze tacite, che è il "vedere". La seconda contiene un'affascinante intervista a Yoichi Ohira, designer che ha a lungo collaborato con Livio Serena, tradotta dal volume di Barry Friedman e riprodotta per gentile concessione.
