Condition: Good, unless otherwise noted. 39x30cm, x, 1384 pp. 966 items illustrated on full page b/w plates. // Luxurious, numbered edition of 250 copies printed on handmade paper. This extensive collection of about 1000 objects was assembled in Peking from 1915 to 1927 by Sir Victor Sassoon. The introduction states: ?Many pieces were purchased from Manchu families whose forebears had received them as gifts from the Imperial court. Others were bought from temples, both Taoist and Buddhist, where the fabric of the temple needed urgent repairs and the Priest-in-Charge was allowed to part with some of his possessions to provide necessary funds'. Contains sections on: Buddhist Figures, Other Religious Figures, Historical and Mythical Figures, Groups of Figures, Miscellaneous, Vases, Plaques, Handrests, Brush Pots, Screens, Trays, Snuff Bottles, Ju-I (Ruyi). All 966 ivory objects are illustrated in fine and clear black-and-white plates and described in much detail. There are also indexes, one of which gives a brief account of famous ivory carvers. This set is copy Number 148 and is signed at the beginning of Volume One by both the author, Sydney Edward Lucas, and Sir Victor Sassoon. A rare work on a superb collection and an important reference. A testament to the art of the Chinese carver. Some slight grubbiness to the covers, entirely commensurate with age and careful handling. Very clean, as new, inside. Overall a fine copy of a marvellous work. Vellum, cloth sides, blocked gold.
