L'opera è scritta in versi in quanto l'autore asserisce che "i versi sciolti non sono poi sempre così sdegnosi, che non sappiano all'uopo presentarsi condecentemente, benchè privi di splendidi ornamenti, e non abbiano miglior garbo di qualunque prosa corretta e disinvolta".Esemplare perfettamente conservato. Secondo Carlo Curto, curatore delle Opere scelte del Pellico per la Utet, Luigi che ebbe una vita avventurosa quasi quanto quella di Silvio avrebbe meritato un volume dedicato integralmente a lui e non solo dei brevi riferimenti nei libri dedicati al più famoso fratello. Per questo ho rintracciato le lettere di Luigi Pellico indirizzate a vari corrispondenti e ho deciso di riunirle in una pubblicazione che spero possa risultare utile agli studiosi della letteratura del periodo risorgimentale, ma anche del Foscolo, di cui Luigi fu grande amico, anche se, a detta di Foscolo, Luigi era rispetto a Silvio "il cristallo paragonato al diamante".
