"Que huns amortalhàrão o Reyno, e outros querem-no enterrar; tendo lhe jà na vida inventariado a fazenda, para na morte a pertenderem alcançar como inimigos, que apoderados da ambição se fazem ajudantes de mortos, para virem a ser ministros de vivos. ABOUT KING D.Sebastião I D. Sebastian I, known as King D. Sebastian, was a Portuguese monarch who reigned from 1557 until his death in 1578. He was born on January 20, 1554, in Lisbon, Portugal, and was the son of the heir apparent D. João (future D. João IV) and the grandson of D. João III. D. Sebastian ascended the throne at the age of three, following the death of his grandfather, D. João III. During his youth, he received a rigorous education and had a keen interest in military affairs and the expansion of the Portuguese Empire. One of D. Sebastian's main ambitions was to lead a crusade against the Moors in North Africa. In 1578, at the age of only 24, he decided to launch a military expedition to Morocco. However, the Battle of Alcácer-Quibir proved disastrous for the Portuguese forces, and D. Sebastian was declared dead, as he went missing in action. His body was never found, giving rise to various legends and theories that he had survived. The premature death and lack of a direct heir to the throne caused a succession crisis in Portugal, resulting in the Spanish dominion under Philip II, King of Spain, who became Philip I of Portugal. This period is known as the Iberian Union, which lasted from 1580 to 1640. D. Sebastian became known in Portuguese history as "The Desired" due to the hope and idealization that the Portuguese placed in him, as well as the myth that he would one day return to save Portugal. His death in the Battle of Alcácer-Quibir marked a period of political instability and uncertainty in Portugal. His figure and tragic fate have had a lasting impact on Portuguese culture and popular imagination.
