Le second texte est également à la date de 1688, mais pas à la même adresse. Une page de titre pour la dernière partie : Io. Petro Bellori notae in…numistata tum Ephesia, tum aliarum urbium apibus insignata, sans adresse et sans lieu, avec une abeille en vignette de titre. Dans les trois parties, les planches sont prises dans la pagination. Les deux parties qui suivent la première ne faisaient pas partie de la première édition, elles sont jointes au texte de Mnestrier pour la première fois. L'illustration contient 24 planches : 12 planches pour la première partie, certaines avec 2 figures. 10 planches, la plupart de médailles pour la seconde partie. 2 planches pour la troisième partie. Superbement gravées sur cuivre, ces planches ne sont pas signées. Reliure moderne à la bradel en demi vélin crème, dos lisse, pièce de titre de chagrin noir, plats de papier ancien, reliure signée Goy & Vilaine. * Claude-François Ménestrier était bibliothècaire du cardinal Barberin lorsqu'il écrivit ce livre sur la célèbre statue antique de Diane d'Ephèse (ou Artemis). Il cherchait en fait à répondre aux interrogations suscitées par les multiples symboles de la sculpture et au mystère du culte de Diane. A travers les différentes représentations de cette Diane d'Ephèse, l'auteur émet plusieurs hypothèses sur la signification des animaux qui peuplent la statue, sur les multiples seins, et tente de définir l'origine de ces symboles. Montfaucon, citant la statue dans son grand ouvrage :L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, renverra à la lecture du livre de Ménestrier dont il fait l'éloge, affirmant que l'auteur donne la signification de tous les symboles, jusqu'aux plus petits, même si selon lui, les connaissances parcellaires dont nous disposons ne permettent pas de comprendre parfaitement les mystères de la Diane d'Ephèse. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] New edition, after the first, also published in Rome in 1657. He sought in fact to answer the questions raised by the multiple symbols of the sculpture and the mystery of the cult of Diana. Through the different representations of this Diana of Ephesus, the author puts forward several hypotheses on the significance of the animals that populate the statue, on the multiple breasts, and attempts to define the origin of these symbols. Montfaucon, citing the statue in his great work: L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, will refer to reading Ménestrier's book which he praises, affirming that the author gives the significance of all the symbols, down to the smallest ones, even if according to him, the fragmentary knowledge at our disposal does not allow us to understand perfectly the mysteries of Diana of Ephesus.
