Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. George Luks, et al (illustrator). 1st Edition. "Edward W. Root, Collector and Teacher" is the title of the Exhibition catalog of the show mounted by the Fred L. Emerson Gallery on the Hamilton College Campus of artworks from the Root collection, October 1 through November 14, 1982. The catalog is interesting for the fine Introductory Preface to the catalog by Hamilton Professor of Art, William Salzillo; Professor Salzillo was director of the Emerson Gallery at the time of the exhibit. Interestingly there is a generous appreciation by Ruth O. Travato of Edward W. Root, who was the son of Secretary of War Elihu Root, which details Edward W. Root's development as an artist, teacher and collector. This is illustrated by number of photographs, including is one of Root with students, and also Root with his friend and mentor George Luks. A chronology of Root's life is provided. At the beginning of the catalog is a black-and-white reproduction of the portrait of Edward W. Root painted by George B. Luks. This is a special item for anyone who has connections to Hamilton College. From 1920 to 1940 Edward Root taught Art Appreciation at Hamilton. Thousands of Hamilton students arrived at a deeper understanding of art and what makes something art, through his profound love and universal knowledge of the field. In 1940 Professor Root stopped teaching (formally), and devoted his energy to building a collection of superb art. Considering his vast knowledge, and his impeccable taste, it is no wonder that the collection became renowned. There are numerous black-and-white reproductions in this catalog, really a small representation of the whole collection. What makes this catalog special is that there are quotes from Professor Root, himself, provided in the descriptive passages, in which he used his vast artistic knowledge to provide critical insight of the art; these include excerpts from letters, and teaching aids used by Professor Root. There are also excerpts of letters from some of the artists themselves. The art ranges from classic artists such as Rembrandt, Goya, Rodin, and Daumier, to moderns such as Maurice Prendergast, Charles Burchfield, Edward Hopper, Reginald Marsh and George Luks.

The Spanish Colonial style of architecture dominated in the early Spanish colonies of North and South America, and were also somewhat visible in its other colonies. It is sometimes marked by the contrast between the simple, solid construction demanded by the new environment and the Baroque ornamentation exported from Spain. Mexico, as the center of New Spain and the richest province of Spain's colonial empire has some of the most renowned buildings built in this style. With twenty-nine sites, Mexico has more sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list than any other country in the Americas, many of them boasting some of the richest Spanish Colonial architecture. Some of the most famous cities in Mexico built in the Colonial style are Puebla, Zacatecas, Querétaro, Guanajuato, and Morelia. During the late 17th century to 1750, one of Mexico's most popular architectural styles was Mexican Churrigueresque. These buildings were built in an ultra-Baroque, fantastically extravagant and visually frenetic style. Condition: Some slight edge wear else a better than very good copy.
