Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American Edition. Hardcover, Stated First Edition (American) 1935 E. P. Dutton 263 pages. Very Good+, in a VG DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear, and a touch of dust soiling to mustard cloth covers with green spine titles and green spear on front panel - corners sharp. Minor shelf/edge wear and dust soiling, spine darkening and small chipping to scarce original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. Great illustration (dark green) of elephant pushing on a tree with two front legs on the front panel of the DJ. Previous owner name and address on FFEP. No other writing - all pages are clean and crisp. Seven chapters with 11 illustrations. This book is referred to as ?the African hunters Bible? Letters from such great sportsmen and explorers as R. J. Cuninghame, major C. H. Stigand, and F. C. Selous, the friend and companion of Theodore Roosevelt on his African game expedition, form the body of the book, with much thrilling information about these men and they animals they faced. The author Denis D. Lyell, was an accomplished African hunter who used the .256 Gibbs cartridge for some African hunting. Yes, I know this is a very small cartridge for elephant but many were taken with a 7mm Mauser by Edward Bell. Using a small caliber requires a head shot and surgical precision. As a very smart man once said ? Not for tourists.? If the shot is not presented right, then you need the heavy stuff, Which at that time might have been a .400 Jeffery. Highly recommended for all serious hunters. There is much wisdom here. Very scarce First American edition with the even scarcer DJ. LOC FB-02.
