Müller (Hamburg 1743 - 1828 Itzehoe) verspottet mit dieser Geschichte nicht nur die Unbildung und die Willkür der Fürsten, sondern z. Seine ersten Werke veröffentlichte er in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Magdeburger Verleger Daniel Christian Hechtel, dessen Tochter er 1771 heiratete. Im selben Jahr machte er sich als Buchhändler und Verleger in Hamburg selbständig. 1773 gründete er eine Verlagsbuchhandlung in Itzehoe, die er jedoch 1783 aus wirtschaftlichen und gesundheitlichen Gründen wieder aufgab, um sich nun ausschließlich seiner literarischen Tätigkeit zu widmen. Müller war vor allem mit komisch-satirischen Romanen nach dem Vorbild des englischen Autors Henry Fielding erfolgreich, die den Geschmack der bürgerlichen Leserschaft trafen. In dem satirischen Roman Siegfried von Lindenberg (1779, Neuausg. 1966) verspottete er Empfindsamkeit und Geniekult. M. veröffentlichte außerdem Gedichte (2 Tle., 1770/71), Komische Romane (8 Bde., 1786-91) und den Roman Sara Reinert (4 Bde., 1796). (DBE).
