Condition: Very Good. A nineteenth-century Englishwoman's attractivemanuscript transcription of a series of French educational texts: 1) 'Cours de Rhetorique' by 'M[onsieur] B Jullien', author of a related but different printed text, Petit Traite de Rhetorique et de Litterature (Paris: Hachette, 1853); 2) Cours de Chimie, also b…y Jullien; 3) Cours de Physique, again by Jullien; 4) Cours d'Histoire naturelle, by 'M Covilbeaux', possibly A P Covilbeaux, author of an educational tract Dieu dirige tout circulairement et instruit l'ame par les sens (Paris, [1859]); 5) Notes Diverses; 6) Notes Diverses, by 'Mr Levi'. All but one of the transcriptions are the work of one Eunice Truscott; the Cours d'Histoire naturelle was rendered by 'Mlle Katie'. It is tempting to imagine that Jullien, Covilbeaux and Levi were the girls' tutors and that the texts are direct records of lessons. The texts range from to 50 to 160 pages in length and are executed in a tiny hand of exemplary neatness and total legibility, varied by italics and decorative capitals. The four educational 'courses' are traditionally structured taxonomies of their subjects. The miscellaneous notes include material on the Bible, French history, French classical drama, and the contemporary state of Europe as illustrated by hand-drawn and -coloured maps. A small table on contemporary sovereigns is dated 1847, with Louis Philippe on the French throne. Small quarto (21 x 17 cm) in dark green buckram lettered gilt at spine (COURS DE 1846 & 1847 / Eunice); all page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Many pages unfilled. A unique insight into an 1840s private female education Cloth sl rubbed; otherwise excellent, clean condition.
