This is the tale of Phari, told in third person by the author of a pony who lived in India, his hardships, early life on the wind-swept table land of Tibet, through his life with Ta-Lun's caravan in the hills, working unflaggingly amidst the snow and wind; his friendship with the mule, Thunder, his sale to Sahib, Mr. Martin, his training by Mary Martin the 14-year old daughter of the Englishman, as a riding pony and afterwards as a polo pony. Then follows his capture by thieves and his experiences on Active Service.
