Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. A lovely family association copy, signed by the author with another inscription on on the front free endpaper: "For Natachee Scott Momaday, from Santa Claus, Merry Christmas 1990, Scott, Reina, Lore." In the hand of N. Scott Momaday, who wrote the foreword to this book, to his mother; Lore is his daughter, and we are not entirely sure about Renia's relationship. This book is from the library of N. Scott Momaday, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for House of the Rising Dawn in 1969 and a key figure of the literary Native American Renaissance. Natchee was herself an important educator, artist, and author. Also laid in is a card in texture blue paper with one uncut edge in a matching envelope addressed to "Grandmere" with an original portrait sketch by Momaday on the front, signed with his initials. The portrait is likely of his mother, the recipient. The interior reads "Merry Christmas! (I was thinking of Branwell Bronte when I drew this). Scott, Renia, Lore" (Bronte was an English poet and artist who was the brother of the famous Brontes). The book contrast historic photographs of Southwest Native Americans with contemporary color photographs of people from the same tribes in the same places or environment. Some of the historic photographers include Wesley Bradfield, Edward S. Curtis, Wyatt Davis, and Charles Lummis. Keegan's work is widely collected including at the Library Congress, the White House, and the Metropolitan Museum of art. A wide quarto in texture paper black boards with silver lettering to spine. Very good with one hard bump to outer front board edge, otherwise near fine. In a very good jacket with a little wear to spine crown at rear and a half-inch tear to lower rear corner; a quote from Momaday's foreword is the main feature on the rear of the jacket. The card is fine in an envelope torn out open in its side. A great association with original art laid in. More about the book: "Keegan's work serves as an excellent example of how American Indians continue to be photographed and marketed as exotic Others. For Keegan, as well as others who make a living photographing and selling images of "Indians," American Indians only appear photogenic when they are wearing ceremonial regalia. The images of Indians taken at the turn of the 20th century that are slapped along Keegan's work in this text convey Southwestern Indians as frozen in time and unchanging. The picture of modern American Indians is a lot more complex than what is presented in Keegan's much blurred and distorted photography.". Signed. …
