Novel based on the fate of the French frigate the Medusa, which was shipwrecked in 1810, with only 15 of approximately 400 passengers surviving on a raft, immortalized in Théodore Géricault's painting "The Raft of the Medusa," a reproduction of which adorns the jacket cover.
