Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. 44 Pages. Originally published in 1908. Publication date not given for this Second Edition but it is thought to have been published before 1929 or possibly even before 1923. Book shows little wear and no marks or stamps. Stiff covers with dust jacket like flaps. This pamphlet is not a 'Guide to Pompei' as this term is generally understood. Generally the monuments of classical antiquity are considered in a purely exterior, artistic and historical light, as though they belonged to a civilization which has no rapport whatsoever with our own. This is a mistake, for, given the deep and vast inheritance left us by the classical civilization, for good or for ill, it is well to try and penetrate beyond the mere artistic and historic exterior. One should try to cull the very soul of the ancient civilization in its most hidden essence, in order to judge what does or does not accord with today. No spot in the world is better adapted than Pompei for this intimate penetration of Roman civilization, for in no other place can you observe and grasp it so completely. Most travel books on Pompei present the dead City in its purely exterior aspect and from a strictly artistic and historic point of view, and do not try to penetrate this cold and dead crust, and grasp the antique soul in all that it contains, it good or ill, of real and live matter for us. The author is presenting to those who visit Pompei some idea that enables one to penetrate the heart of old Roman civilization, to examine, and consider it, not as a dead thing of no special spiritual value, but rather as a living vital power capable of affecting modern thought to no inconsiderable amount. Illustrated with 12 black and white photographs.

The author argues that the city's archaeological treasures, often viewed through a purely artistic or historical lens, offer a unique window into the essence of ancient Roman life and its stark contrast with the modern conscience. The narrative takes us on a journey through Pompeii's houses, temples, and even its graffiti-covered walls, revealing a society obsessed with beauty and pleasure, yet devoid of a true understanding of morality or the afterlife. The author challenges the conventional perception of Pompeii as a Hellenistic city, highlighting its deeply Roman character, obsessed with strength, success, and spectacle, as epitomized by the horrors of the gladiatorial games. By contrasting the pagan soul with the values of the Christian spirit, the book unveils the profound ethical and spiritual chasm that separates the ancient world from our own. Ultimately, this exploration of Pompeii serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of history, inviting us to reflect on the enduring legacy of Roman civilisation and its impact on our understanding of humanity. This book explores the unexpected connection between the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus and the Christian heresy known as Noetianism, a group who believed that the Father and Son were not distinct entities but rather two aspects of the same divine being. The author argues that the tenets of Noetianism stem directly from the obscure and complex philosophical system of Heraclitus, arguing that the two share striking conceptual and thematic similarities. This book offers valuable insights into the origins of Christian thought, exploring the ways in which ancient Greek ideas influenced the development of early Christian beliefs and practices. Heraclitus's writings are analyzed through the lens of Noetianism, revealing a profound understanding of the nature of being and the relationship between the divine and the human. By comparing Heraclitus's enigmatic fragments with Noetian teachings, the author sheds new light on both systems, offering a fresh perspective on the philosophical underpinnings of early Christianity.
