First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Tall narrow octavo. 68pp. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering on front board. Near fine with ink owner name, and some rubbing and bumping at the edges. A memorial volume for Mary Morison, daughter of Reverend John H. Morrison, a pastor of the First Congregational Parish. This book presents her funeral service at the Unitarian Church of Peterborough, which most notably includes an address by Katherine P. Loring, the head of the history department at the Society to Encourage Studies at Home, the first correspondence school in the United States, started by Anna Ticknor in 1873. Loring headed the history department and was a close friend of Alice James, sister of author Henry James, who is said to have based the characters of Olive Chancellor and Verena Tarrant in his novel, *The Bostonians, on the pair. Morison herself joined Loring at the Society as the head of the literature department in 1881, greatly expanding it beyond a basic study of Milton and Shakespeare to include literature of the Victorian Age and a host of modern poets. Later, she became the chairman of the Library Committee for the Boston Public Library. The remaining addresses including one from New Hampshire Governor Robert P. Bass, composer Edward MacDowell, and special worker Jeffrey R. Brackett. An uncommon volume highlighting the accomplishments of an important New England woman, as well as an address by an important American educator.
