Presumed first edition. 120pp. This educational book starts with a brief historical introduction, in English, to French explorers in Tasmania. Following are extracts, in French, from the works of Francoise Peron, Alexandre Dumas and the Comte de Beauvoir. The extracts have been revised by Professor G.G. Nicholson, of the University of Sydney. At the end of the book are short notes and a vocabulary. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. The spine ends are bumped and there is some rubbing down the spine edges. The contents are tight and clean with a few pages of the French text having useful pencil notes to aid translation. A name has been written on the rear free endpaper.

This book challenges the premise that the Romans expanded their territory for their own economic advancement and instead posits that their expansion was a series of unfortunate accidents spurred on by defensive wars and their commitment to law and order. It takes for granted previous theories positing that Romans were mostly farmers, but this book argues that a city of 200,000 with trade and industry was unlikely to be primarily composed of farmers. The author further asserts that a more likely explanation for Roman expansion is that they were driven into conflict protecting economic interests, such as grain shipping and commerce. Prior studies of Roman history have often overemphasized the role of military leaders, and this text goes a step further to suggest that even institutions such as the fetial priesthood, previously venerated as the arbiters of true Roman conduct, were not entirely impartial servants of justice. By examining the contradictions, errors, and biases in historical works on Rome, the author demonstrates that scholarly insights are only as good as the philosophies they are constructed from, and that all histories, both ancient and modern, should be subject to critical examination. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book explores several such conflicts throughout history, from the Roman Empire to the First World War. The author contends that with the rise of industrialization, economic factors have taken precedence over land and food as drivers of conflict. Germany's rapid industrialization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, for example, led to growing concerns over access to coal and iron ore, resources it lacked domestically but were vital to its military and economic power. The author argues that resolving these economic tensions will be critical to preventing future wars and establishing lasting peace.
