Charming letter of apology to a colleague whom Mach had promised an article on the acoustics of sounding vases (acoustic jars) as discussed by Vitruvius: : "Die Hoffnung Ihnen etwas über Schallgefässe in Kürze liefern zu können, hat fortwährend mein Schreiben verzögert. Decanatsgeschäfte, optische Arbeiten und Zufälle aller Art in meiner Familie haben mich bisher an Ausführung meines Vorsatzes verhindert. Nun kann ich aber meine Entschuldigung wenigstens nicht länger hinausschieben und muss das Versprechen hinzufügen, mich bald durch die That zu rechtfertigen. Kommen Sie heuer nach Wiesbaden? Wann sind Sie in Würzburg anzutreffen?". - In 1872/73 Ernst Mach was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Prague. - Slightly browned and stained; insignificant edge tears (not touching text).
