First Edition
Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First edition. First printing of this colorful Christmas gift book filled with seasonal poems and bright color plates, in the scarce original dust jacket. Dust jackets from this period are unusual survivals, particularly on gift books, when they would often be discarded early as part of the wrapping. This is a particularly clean example, showing the contrast between the relatively plain jacket and the vibrant blue boards and chromolithograph illustrations. 8.75'' x 7''. Original cloth-backed blue and brown pictorial boards. Unclipped (no price) pictorial dust jacket (married). Ten color plates with other illustrations in brown. 32 pages. Bookplate of Joseph Bulmer Thackeray to front pastedown. Die-cut W. Hagelberg chromolithograph Christmas card of a girl and two cats loosely laid in. Manuscript note on blue paper loosely laid in, "For the little pet / with lots of love & kisses / from Nurse Evelyn / Dec 23rd 91." Jacket with scattered faint soil, closed crack running down spine, starting to bottom; tiny closed hole to spine. Binding with light wear and faint toning to edges, mild bumping to corners and spine ends. Leaves with occasional faint foxing; front hinge cracking, but sound. Colors vibrant. Very good plus in near fine dust jacket.
