The author argues that, despite the prevailing view that Britain's international trade was an indicator of progress, and the suggestio…n that imported goods undermined domestic industry, neither position is correct. The author instead highlights that the quantity of commodities available per head declined after 1897. This book explores an alternative explanation for this phenomenon, namely a reduction in capital available per head after 1897. The author contends that the available evidence does not support the view that the fall in real wages was due to an increase in the gold supply, increase in military expenditure or exhaustion of the world's most fruitful lands. The author meticulously examines the available data and concludes that a decline in capital investment within the UK after 1900 is the most likely explanation for the observed stagnation in output and the accompanying decline in real wages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
