Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition, 1895. Volume 1 was originally published in 1893, volume 2 in 1894. Volume 1 has somewhat more wear than volume 2, with a spine slant , more wear at spine ends, tiny tears on spine ends and slightly more rubbing overall. Volume 2 has no spine slant, less wear on spine ends, less rubbing, but a white spot on front cover. Each volume has award stickers from an unnamed school on front paste-down. Fore-edge and bottom pages are deckle-edged while the top edges are gilt, gilt lettering on front covers and spines, and decorative illustrtation on each front cover and spine. Many illustrations (114 in all) depict maps (of areas and battles) and ships (in battles or alone). Lieutenant Roy C. Smith, U.S.N. provided technical revisions. There are two appendices at end of volume 2: 1. The present navy of the United States. 2. Role of honor - Seamen who have won medals for bravery in action. Textual footnotes throughout and index at end of Volume 2. Pages: Volume 1. 17 page introduction plus 577 pages. 2. 3 page note plus 640 pages. Massive undertaking, but a very readable text. Dark nay cloth bindings.
