Illustrations include the Constitution, the wounding of Decatur during the chase of the President by the British squadron, a scene of the Battle of Lake Champlain, a deck-view of the Constitution in action with the Levant and Cyane, the United States captures the Macedonian, the Frolic reduced to a wreck by the first Wasp, the Guerriere in the trough of the sea, and the crew of the Shannon boarding the Chesapeake. Interior leaves are clean and tight. A photocopy of part of the book from the Somers Historical Society, Somers, CT. A clear reading copy about the naval actions with France and Tripoli at the beginning of the nineteenth century when the American Navy adversaries were France and the Barbary States.

All pages of text are present, but they may include extensive notes/highlighting, be heavily stained, or detached. May be missing non-text pages (e.g. end pages, half title, title, frontispiece.).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition, 1895. Volume 1 was originally published in 1893, volume 2 in 1894. Volume 1 has somewhat more wear than volume 2, with a spine slant , more wear at spine ends, tiny tears on spine ends and slightly more rubbing overall. Volume 2 has no spine slant, less wear on spine ends, less rubbing, but a white spot on front cover. Each volume has award stickers from an unnamed school on front paste-down. Fore-edge and bottom pages are deckle-edged while the top edges are gilt, gilt lettering on front covers and spines, and decorative illustrtation on each front cover and spine. Many illustrations (114 in all) depict maps (of areas and battles) and ships (in battles or alone). Lieutenant Roy C. Smith, U.S.N. provided technical revisions. There are two appendices at end of volume 2: 1. The present navy of the United States. 2. Role of honor - Seamen who have won medals for bravery in action. Textual footnotes throughout and index at end of Volume 2. Pages: Volume 1. 17 page introduction plus 577 pages. 2. 3 page note plus 640 pages. Massive undertaking, but a very readable text. Dark nay cloth bindings.

Profusely illustrated with many full page photo plates of the pirates and privateers of America. Full gilt deep navy blue cloth with top edge gilt, a royal over sized 8vo, with some trace of ex library marking on spine and fore edge at bottom, else a pretty copy, tight, text block is fine. Rare book, great subject.

Book is tight, square, relatively sharp-cornered and free of markings and flaws inside and out. Top edge gilt. Nice frontispiece and multiple other illustrations. Famous ships, ship-captains, and sea-battles are recounted - explores the significant role of American privateers during the Anglo-American wars of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Privateers provided essential reinforcements for the small American navy in attacking and capturing foreign merchant ships during this key period of maritime history. Dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt. 519 pp.

Cloth. Condition: Good/very Good. Complete two volume set in navy blue cloth with gilt on cover and spine, with a gilt pictorial on spine of crossed weapons with an anchor. Embossed, sculptural illustration of a robed figure holding a scroll in front of a sailing ship, overlaid with copper on front cover of both volumes. The copper paint is rubbed on Volume I. Gilt top edges and pale yellow endpapers. Volume I has bumped and worn corners and spine tips with a crack staring at front hinge. Volume II has a crack starting at rear hinge and a partially detached title page. Small owner name sticker on glued down end paper of both volumes. Technical revision by Roy C. Smith.
