Macmilln June 13, 1905 - August 18, 1987) was an American writer, lecturer, photographer. In 1948 she detailed her 1937-1939 expeditions in this memoir, Green Seas and White Ice. From 1937 onward she had been a chief photographer in nine Arctic expeditions on the Schooner Bowdoin schooner to Labrador, Baffin Island, and West Greenland. Throughout her expeditions, MacMillan created thousands of photographs, audio recordings of Inuktitut songs, and films of Umiak sailors. She later organized these and Inuit Art to help curate the Prary MacMillan Artic Museum at Bowdoin College. As a child, her parents were often visited by their friend Donald MacMillan, whom she called "Uncle Dan." Donald MacMillan would visit her family between Arctic expeditions, bringing Miriam Norton Look a gift of "a beaded craft, an ivory figurine, or some other token of his adventures in the North." They corresponded via letters. In 1935 at age 29 she married 61 year old Donald MacMillan. She has an honorary degree from Bowdoin and was involved in the restoration of the Schooner Bowdoin.
