Condition: Good. Stiff paper wrappers, printed in colors, now quite soiled with a loosening front cover, 5 x 4 inches, publisher's advert on back. The six stories each have their own title page; there are no page numbers, appx. 16 pp. each, or 96 in total. The text is generally clean with infrequent light foxing. Leavitt & Allen was at 379 Broadway from about 1855 to 1860. This little book is undated; date taken from the bibliography at WorldCat.Clara de Chatelain (1807-1876), b. & d. London, England. Born Clara Du Maxet de Pontigny, the daughter of a French gentleman and English mother, as a young woman she lived for some years in France. A very prolific author, she wrote for the English periodical press under the pseudonym Leopold Wray. She translated over 400 songs for musical houses, and "her books of fairy-tales included 140 original tales and 50 retellings of classic fairy tales; and she also wrote 16 handbooks." - wikipedia.

First Edition. Brown cloth with blind stamped gilt design to front board bearing the title, and a blind stamped floral design around both boards. Fresh endpapers have been laid down. Internally mostly clean with occasional spotting and browning, but some creasing to leaves in the introduction and a small tear on page vii/viii which does not affect text. All illustrated plates (25) present showcasing Frölich's wonderful silhouette work. Some sunning to the spine of the book an some minor marking to the front board. Good. A very scarce item in commerce, and a joy to read. It is a book of 25 poems, translated from German to English by Madame de Chatelain, such as, 'The Unlucky Sportsman', 'Two Quarrelsome Sprits', 'Sloth and Pride: A Fable', with each poem having a black and white silhouette printed at the top. Frölich was the son of a shoemaker, but found a love of art and started to use scissors. It appears that this was issued in several colours of cloth bindings.
