Bright boards with rubbed edges and brown cloth spine with black lettering and elephant head. Spine cloth is weakened but intact. Small amount of surface color missing on back board. Green book tape repaired the back inside hinge. Brightly colored end papers and illustrations as well as some black and white illustrations. Binding is solid and pages are clean and complete. A rare book in very good condition.

Hader, Berta and Elmer. 115 ORIGINAL PEN, INK AND WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS BY BERTA AND ELMER HADER PUBLISHED IN SONNY ELEPHANT BY MADGE A. BIGHAM. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1930. This lot consists of 115 pen, ink and watercolor drawings by the Haders including six different border designs, numerous drawings which were utilized within text, numerous drawings that were utilized as full page illustrations and one double page drawing which was utilized for the front and back endpapers; this lot includes all but seven of the drawings which were used to illustrate the first edition of Madge A. Bigham's book, Sonny Elephant; the 115 drawings are on a total of 79 sheets of artist board of varying sizes; most boards with adhesive residue in the margins from previous mattings. The Haders were an illustrating couple who jointly illustrated more than 70 children's books, about half of which they also wrote. They won the Caldecott Honor Book Award in 1940 for Cock-a-Doodle-Doo and in 1944 for The Mighty Hunter. In 1949 they won the top honor in their field, the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which recognizes the preceding year's "most distinguished American picture book for children" for their book, The Big Snow. The condition of the drawings is NEAR FINE OR BETTER. Included with the drawings is a first edition reading copy of Sonny Elephant where the drawings were originally published.
