The multi-talented physician Magnus Gabriel von Block (1669-1722) spoke eleven languages and was a diligent writer. After studies in Uppsala and extensive travels abroad, during which Block became acquainted with Leibniz and studied medicine, among other things, he became a district medical officer in Östergötland in 1702 and settled in Norrköping. In several of his works he fought against superstition and belief in miracles, phenomena which still had a stronghold in Sweden at the time. Some historians have mentioned Block as an important precursor of the enlightenment ideas in Sweden.…
