This is a Latin edition published in Amsterdam of Herrera's very rare original work published in Madrid in 1601. This collection of voyages is often referred to as an edition of Herrera, which is not strictly correct. It is important for including the first printed official account of Jacob le Maire's voyage 1615-17 that discovered Cape Horn and a further route to the Pacific Ocean. The maps accompanying the Herrera part were faithfully taken from the earlier work, even to the extent that le Maire's insular Tierra del Fuego, reported in the same work, is not depicted. Neither for that matter is an insular California as delineated on the title page.Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (1559â1625) was born in the region of Segovia into a noble family. He became the official Spanish historian to King Philip II, III, and IV of Spain and as such had remarkable access to the archives. Indeed, he was responsible for recording the Americas as early as 1596. In 1601 he published the 'Description de las Indias Occidentales', one of the most comprehensive histories of the America's yet published. It was accompanied by 14 maps largely derived from Lopez de Velasco manuscripts. Many of Herrera's sources have been lost to us over time which makes his work even more valuable.In 1622 Michiel Colijn re-published the work in Latin, Dutch, and French. This Latin edition was translated by Caspar Barleus (1584-1648) whose three-page Preface dedicates the work to the States General. Following Herrera's account on 'Fol. 45' is the 'Ephemerides sivà Descriptio Navigationis Australis' which describes Le Maire's voyage illustrated with a map. It includes a list of the voyages which had passed through into the Pacific since the time of Magellan. This is followed by the 'Descriptio Indiae Occidentalis' by Petro Ordonnez de Cevallos and the 'Brevis ac succincta Americae, sive Novi Orbis omniumque, quae in eo sunt, regionum hactenus exploratarum descriptio, excerpta à tabulis geographicis' by Petrus Bertius.It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Le Maire's voyage. He set out with Willem Cornelis Schouten with the aim of finding another route to the Spice Islands that did not involve going through the monopolised Straits of Magellan. In rounding Cape Horn, they opened the way for future travellers into the Pacific. They went onto prove that the great southern continent was not connected to South America or New Guinea. The Dutch East India Company seized Le Maire's vessel and diary following their arrival in the East Indies. It was not until this work that Le Maire's father was able to get back his son's journals and publish them.The title page to the whole is significant as it includes a map of the American continent. "This small map's chief claim to fame is in being the first map to delineate California as an island. It is a legend on the Henry Briggs map of 1625 that informs us of the probable source of this geographical anomaly. It is a map taken from a Spanish vessel by the Dutch and is assumed to be that accompanying Friar Antonio de la Ascension's written account of October 1620 intended for the Council of the Indies and the King of Spain. In it he presents his firm belief in California as an island. The map does not survive but Briggs mentions in 1622 having seen in London a Dutch map showing such an island. The publisher of this expanded edition of Herrera's work, Michiel Colijn, gives no explanation for its use. He even includes a peninsular California in the general map of the same work. The origins of the myth go back further in history." (Burden).

One of the most significant illustrated travel books of the early 1600s. Spilbergen and Le Maire's "The East and West IndianMirror", which combines two circumnavigation narratives, was first published in Leiden in 1619 in simultaneous Dutch and Latin editions. A second issue of each edition was printed in the same year.This is the first Latin edition, second issue (the same as the first issue in every respect but with the name of Hondius added to the imprint on the title). All of the 1619 editions, both Dutch and Latin, were issued with the same plates. In 1614 Joris van Spilbergen's Dutch East India Company flotilla, comprised of six ships, set out for the Moluccas with the intention of reaching the East Indies via the Strait of Magellan and crossing the Pacific from east to west. The expedition sailed first to Brazil, then through the Strait of Magellan and northwards along the coasts of Chile and Peru, as far as California. Its vessels were armed and carried out attacks on Spanish settlements and shipping en route. Spilbergen then sailed for the Philippines, where he arrived at the start of February 1616 and carried out attacks on Manila-bound shipping for almost a month. The section of the account that deals with the Philippines occupies pp. 84-93 and is illustrated with a superb double-page map of the Manila Strait and a full-page woodcut of ships outside the port of Manila. Both of these plates have a key with points of interest and explanations given in the main text. Spilbergen's ships then sailed on by way of Ternate to Batavia.There he failed to locate a Spanish fleet rumoured to be planning attacks against Dutch interests in the Moluccas. Instead, he encountered Le Maire and Schouten, who had recently arrived from their Pacific crossing on behalf of the Compagnie Australe only to be arrested for breaching the VOC monopoly on the Strait of Magellan passage. Spilbergen was responsible for conducting Le Maire, Schouten and their men back to the Netherlands (although Le Maire died on the voyage). The world map shows the routes of both Spilbergen and Le Maire and, in a rectangular panel at the bottom, Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea (Shirley 304). Among the plates are portrayals of battle-scenes, various ports on the Pacific coast of Spanish America as far north as Acapulco, Manila Bay, and various harbours and islands in the western Pacific and Indonesia.The Speculum orientalis occidentalisque Indiae the 'East and West Indian mirror' narrates two highly important Dutch expeditions to the East Indies via South America and across the Pacific. The first, a powerful East India Company (VOC) fleet under the command of Spilbergen, was essentially predatory, raiding Spanish shipping and settlements; it also aimed to assert the VOC's exclusive passage to the Pacific through the Strait of Magellan, countering challenges by its Dutch rivals. After clearing the Strait, Spilbergen's fleet worked its way up the South American coast, sacking Spanish settlements and attacking Spanish shipping, until it reached Acapulco. It then crossed the Pacific to the Philippines and Ternate, where it hoped to intercept the Spanish force rumoured to be about to descend on the Dutch outposts in the Moluccas. Finally, Spilbergen headed for Batavia, where he encountered Jacob Le Maire and Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, whose expedition is the other voyage recounted in this volume. Their papers, ship (the Eendracht) and crew were immediately seized by the VOC, which saw this independent venture as a serious infringement of its monopoly, and Le Maire and Schouten were taken back to the Netherlands with Spilbergen. Spilbergen's expedition was not intended to be one of 'discovery', but it nevertheless stands out as being exceptionally well-managed, the fifth circumnavigation of the globe, and 'the first to sail half-way round the world with a whole fleet well in hand' (SpateII, p.21).Jacob Le Maire and Schouten had been sent by the Australische Compagnie, formed by Isaac Le Maire (Jacob's father), to discover a new passage to the Pacific south of the Strait of Magellan, thereby circumventing the VOC's exclusive rights, and to trade in any lands they discovered in the South Pacific hopes of finding the southern continent promised in Quiros's memorials were high. They were successful in their first objective, sailing to the Le Maire Strait, which separates Tierra del Fuego from Staten Island, and into the Pacific round Cape Horn (named after Hoorn, their home base), but the southern continent proved elusive. Although commercially motivated, their expedition may be considered as 'the one genuine voyage of Oceanic exploration between Quiros and Tasman' (ibid., p.23). Le Maire died at sea on the way home with Spilbergen, but after several years' litigation his father successfully sued the VOC for the return of his son's journal and was awarded damages.STCN 06262928X; US.

This important work covers the circumnavigations of Joris van Spilbergen from 1614 to 1618, and, in the latter half of the book, those of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Coneliszoon Schouten from 1615 to 1617. It is profusely illustrated with engraved plates, many of which are cartographic or generally topographical, as well as many of ethnographic and natural historical interest. Le Maire and Schouten were aboard the vessel Eendracht when it passed through the strait between Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados, establishing that Tierra del Fuego was not connected to the theorized Great Southern Continent (now known as Antarctica). Their voyage westward into the Pacific was a revelation for the Dutch, as it proved that accessing the Spice Islands from the "southwest" route was practicable. While other navigators had successfully sailed into the Pacific many times before, their voyage along a new route carried a different import, as it directly threatened the VOC's monopoly on the East Indies trade. Upon their appearance in Batavia, the center of the Dutch East Indies, they were arrested and the Eendracht was seized. Eventually, they were released and resumed their journey with Joris van Spilbergen who was circumnavigating the globe using the traditional Strait of Magellan. Le Maire sailed aboard Spilbergen's ship Amsterdam but died before reaching home. Spilbergen transcribed Le Maire's account of the first part of the voyage from the former's deathbed, and he included it in the present work. The confiscation of the Eendracht was challenged by Jacob Le Maire's father Isaac, who was eventually successful in his suit in 1622. Shirley (304) says of the world map at the front of the book: This world map, considerably larger than that in Schouten's narrative, depicts the separate outwards voyages of Joris and Jacob Le Maire and the return route of Spilbergen from the East Indies during which the young Le Maire's death occurred. Rather curiously, Spilbergen's return voyage is shown terminating in England rather than in the Netherlands. A rectangular panel at the bottom describes in detail Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea. Spilbergen's map is on an oval projection which exaggerates the eastwest (and even southerly) line of the Pacific coast of North America.
