Edition originale (il existe une deuxième édition la même année qui témoigne de son succès) de cette "brochure" anonyme relatant la vie de Ney, due à Raymond-Balthazard Maiseau. Publiée quelques mois après l'exécution du maréchal place de l'Observatoire (décembre 1815), elle fait la part belle au procès qui a défrayé le tout Paris et constitue en quelque sorte la première pierre mémorielle de la légende du "Brave des Braves", même si Maiseau conclue que le maréchal Ney "a pu se rendre coupable envers l'honneur" . Selon le dictionnaire bibliographique «La littérature française contemporaine, 1827-1849, T.5». Maiseau fut ancien chef de bureau du commissariat de police d'Anvers et de la préfecture de police de la Seine. (p.238).
