"Abstracts of the Principal Lines of Spirit Levelling in Ireland" was an important technical publication of the British Ordnance Survey, documenting the measurement of heights across Ireland. It was part of the scientific work that established a consistent system of elevations for the nation's maps. It preceded the volume on England and Wales which was published in 1861. Contains tables of numbers and descriptions of Bench Marks, approximate distances between the consecutive bench marks, altitudes and the OS map sheet number. The Bench Marks were distinctive marks (often "crows' feet") stamped or carved onto buildings or stones. Original or contemporary grey cloth with gilt titles to spine and blindstamped bands to spine and double border to boards. The binding is in excellent condition with perhaps a neat repair to the top 1.5 cm of the front hinge. Light foxing to endpapers and prelims. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.…
