About the book >.>.> One of the most influential and far-reaching achievements of the artists of the Russian avant-garde was their isolation of, and investigation into, the intrinsic elements of the work of art. In painting, for example, artists such as Kliun, Popova and Rodchenko explored the essential forces of color, texture, line, they purified them of associative connotations, and attained unprecedented conclusions as in Kliun's Supre-matism, Popova's architectonic compositions, and Rod-chenko's linear structures. These were models of true painting, non-figurative and non-representational. They were more austere, even more "painterly than the often ambiguous works of Kandinsky and Malevich. Although these two artists said much in defense of abstraction, they seemed often to be too interested in cosmic philosophies to remain mere painters. Their subjectivity, their religiosity should not detract from the stature of these masters, but if we are to discover and analyze the purest systems operative within Russian non-objective art, then.
