Only edition of this unrecorded dissertation by Maloet (1684-1742), an esteemed doctor who published on a variety of subjects during his lifetime. Maloet maintained that "life spirit" is housed in the blood. He describes how the blood's chemical process of respiration produces the heat responsible for animation and movement.

März 1684 zu Sauve in Languedoc geboren, am 25. Januar 1703 in Montpellier promovirt; von 1706 bis 1710 war er daselbst supplirender Professor, von 1711 bis 1715 Lehrer der Anatomie in Toulouse, von 1716 zu Montpellier. 1728 ging er nach Paris, um sein Werk über die venerischen Krankheiten zu beenden, folgte aber schon 1729 einem Rufe des Königs von Polen, welcher ihn zum ersten Leibarzt ernannte. Astruc blieb hier nur kurze Zeit, denn 1730 war er bereits wieder in Paris und Leibarzt des Königs von Frankreich. 1731 wurde er an GEOFFROY'S Stelle daselbst zum Professor gewählt. Astruc starb nach einem sehr thätigen Leben als vielbeschäftigter Arzt und emsiger Gelehrter in Paris am 5. Mai 1760. Von seinen zahlreichen Werken ist das unten namhaft gemachte offenbar das beste und heute noch für jeden medicinischen Geschichtsforscher geradezu unentbehrlich. Es existiren 21 verschiedene Ausgaben und Uebersetzungen dieses heute noch umfänglichsten Werkes über die venerischen Krankheiten. Der erste Band enthält die Pathologie und Therapie dieser Uebel im vollständigen Umfange des damaligen Wissens: - nur begeht hier Astruc einen sehr häufigen Fehler der Gelehrten : er vertheidigt und glaubt mehr an das hergebrachte, wenn auch unrichtige Alte, und bestreitet oft die wichtigen Neuerungen seiner Zeitgenossen. Der zweite Band, welcher die reichhaltigste Bibliographie, Excerpte und theilweise auch historische Erörterungen enthält, wurde seit HENSLER schon vielfach und mitunter hart verurtheilt, weil- man in demselben einige Unrichtigkeiten nachweisen konnte. (Vielfache und im Laufe vieler Jahre oftmals wiederholte Vergleiche der Astruc'schen Excerpte mit den Originalien haben mich dahin belehrt, dass man Alles zwischen den Anführungszeichen Gegebene - [und dies ist ja doch das weitaus Meiste] - für genau und richtig annnehmen kann.) Astruc war bekanntlich der eifrigste Vertheidiger des amerikanischen Ursprungs der Syphilis. Der Titel des Werkes lautet: "De morbis venereis libri novem ; in quibus disseritur cum de origine, propagatione et contagione horumce affectuum in genere cum de singulorum natura, aetiologia et therapia, cum brevi analysi et epicrisi operum plerorumque, quae de eodem argumento scripta sunt" (Editio altera.
