Der Forschungsreisender, Dichter und Conchologe Hermann Friedrich Joachim von Maltzan (1843-1891; Freiherr zu Wartenberg und Penzlin) beschreibt in anschaulichen Worten und in zahlreichen Exkursionen seine über vierwöchige Reise zusammen mit seiner Frau, der Malerin Agnes Vidal. Beginnend von Lissabon (12. März 1879) über Beja (Region Alentejo) nach Mértola an die spanische Grenze, von dort führt der Weg mit einem Dampfer auf dem Río Guadiana in südlicher Richtung an die Algarve nach Villa Real [de Santo António] und Castro Marim, um an folgenden Tagen mit dem Fuhrwerk Tavira und später Faro zu erreichen. Besuche in Portimao und Lagos folgen, um dann das Cap St. Vincent, die Südwestspitze des europäischen Festlands und das befestigte Sagres zu besuchen. Von Almadena führte die Reise für mehrere Tage zu einem Aufenthalt in Monchique mit österlichem Volksfest (Prozession) und Ausflügen in die Serra de Monchique und auf den Fóia, der höchsten Erhebung der Algarve. Zurück nach Portimao kehrend, folgte eine wissenschaftl. Schleppnetzfahrt und die Weiterreise mit dem Schiff nach Silves und später in die Region Alte mit Loulé und Salir. Der Besuch von Estoi und den römischen Ruinen von Milreu (hier noch als "Ossonoba" beschrieben) schließen die Reise ab und führen am 18. April 1879 zur Rückreise. - Aus der Einleitung: "Die Algarbier sind ruhige arbeitsame Leute. Kräftig gebaut, ohne schön zu sein, muss man sie immerhin stattlich nennen. [. . .] Im Anfange misstrauisch gegen den Fremden, ist der Algarbier bei näherer Bekanntschaft sehr gefällig und uneigennützig, ein treuer Freund und tapferer Gefährte. Mit Recht verdient er seinen Ruf als unerschrockener Seemann. Raub und Mord sind unbekannte Verbrechen. Diebstähle gehören zu den seltensten Vorkommnissen. Zuchthäuser braucht man hier nicht. Wer das Volk nach den Bettlern und Gassenjungen beurtheilt, oder es mit spanischem Vorurtheil betrachtet, kommt vielleicht zu anderen Resultaten". - Hermann von Maltzan gründete 1866 eine mecklenburgische naturhistorische Sammlung in Waren, das spätere "Maltzaneum". 1891 verstirbt er mit 47 Jahren nach kurzer schwerer Krankheit in Berlin (siehe Grewolls 6225). - Der Umschlag mit Verfasserwidmung: "Herrn C[arl] Struck freundschaftlich vom Verfasser". Carl Struck (1832-1898) war Konservator des 1866 von Hermann von Maltzan begründeten Naturhistorischen Museums in Waren (siehe Grewolls 9872f), er wurde Hermann von Maltzans Biograph (siehe Ders.: Hermann von Maltzan, Freiherr zu Wartenberg und Penzlin.
