Folio (39,5 x 29,2 cm), loose as issued in publisher's grey wrappers, publisher's cloth clamshell box. First edition. 11 gelatin silver prints stamped "Man Ray Paris" on verso, each mounted on a double sheet of brown paper with English text printed in white letters opposite. From the edition limited to 100 copies. One of the few artist's proofs, marked "E.A." and signed by Man Ray. Like the first 25 copies, it includes a canvas print mounted on stretcher, monogrammed "MR" at lower right, signed and justified on the back: "Man Ray E.A. 1974 Les voies lactées". A pioneer of surrealist photography, Man Ray reframes art and merges it with the photographic process to create new aesthetic horizons. Observing a work by Man Ray is to see life itself, from desires to pains, through his eyes. Through his bewildering creativity, he produces a poetry leading us to his "Milky Ways": blurred lines between black and gray tracing paths across the pages. Imprinted on the glass of his medicine, these images reflect his intimacy and also open a door to his suffering, revealing a part of himself without control. From these cold tones emerges the lyrical elegance of a personal narrative. Les voies lactées is a poetry of pain and life, shared through the technical finesse and synthesis that make Man Ray a renowned visual artist. Folio (38,1 x 28,5 cm), loose as issued, publisher's illustrated wrappers, housed in publisher's orange cloth box, author's name lettered on spine in black. French edition of Man Ray's Alphabet for Adults. 38 monochrome lithographs by Man Ray (including one used twice for the cover and title), with the signed and numbered rayograph with color silkscreen mounted on wood veneer mounted on card stock. From the edition limited to 180 numbered copies, with this one of 30 hors commerce copies on papier vélin d'Arches, signed by the artist. In this "Alphabet for Adults", Man Ray delights in playing with representations. He hints, evokes without stating, and leaves room for our own interpretation. This diverted abecedary becomes a gentle suggestion, sometimes of love or desire, that the artist offers through a harmony of nouns and adjectives chosen according to his inspiration. From Querelle to Éléphant, passing through Nuit or Usé, he draws black lines on a white background to make these words into something else, creating a new language that minimalism alone is enough to illustrate. Through these refined representations, Man Ray delicately reveals the beauty of simplicity and elegance. A condition report and additional images are available on request.

A superb limited first edition, English translation of Paul Éluard's poetry. Number 235 of 500 copies signed by the translators, Roland Penrose and E. L. T. Mesens. The majority of Éluard's poems were originally published in separate publications throughout 1942, whilst France was under German occupation. Printed on hand made paper with deckled edges, multiple uncut leaves. Illustrated with a line-drawn portrait of Paul Éluard by Man Ray, dated 1936. couverture souple. These photographing women: The scandal of genius",Angels of anarchy : women artists and surrealism, 2009). | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition which supposedly had an issue of 500 numbered copies.
