La ricostruzione dell'ambiente artistico nella Catania del XVII secolo si fonda in questo libro sull'analisi delle assenze e delle presenze: di quanto è andato distrutto…, soprattutto a causa del terremoto che nel 1693 colpì la città, e di quanto si è conservato. Dall'incrocio delle testimonianze scritte con la lettura delle opere superstiti emerge un inedito scorcio della realtà artistica del Seicento catanese, in cui pittori e committenti si rivelano attivi pur tra una catastrofe e l'altra, tra l'eruzione dell'Etna del 1669 e il successivo sisma. In un contesto finora del tutto trascurato l'indagine si dipana attraverso testi pittorici in parte inediti per giungere al recupero dell'attività di artisti il cui profilo non era stato mai tracciato, come nel caso del più noto pittore catanese del periodo: Pietro Abbadessa. La ricerca, condotta nel costante dialogo tra i manufatti e il contesto storico, religioso e culturale, muove dal vaglio della circolazione di opere e di artisti, dall'arrivo di dipinti messinesi o siracusani e di quadri provenienti dai centri della Sicilia occidentale o da Roma. Nel tessuto discontinuo di un secolo caratterizzato dalla perdita affiorano singoli episodi: dall'unica tela superstite del catanese Girolamo La Manna, richiesta dal vescovo Giovanni Torres; al ciclo di affreschi realizzato da Giovanni Battista Corradini in Cattedrale per volere del vescovo romano Innocenzo Massimo, alacre in campo artistico e pronto a sfruttare gli investimenti nella decorazione delle chiese cittadine al fine di difendere il suo tanto discusso operato da ecclesiastico; ai rapporti tra il vescovo Ottavio Branciforti e il catanese Abbadessa. La vitalità dell'ambiente catanese non si esauriva con il 1693: quella catastrofe naturale si sarebbe rivelata stimolo per la produzione artistica. Libro.
