La copella, o coppella, era anticamente un crogiolo poroso a forma di vaso, usato per raffinare metalli preziosi. L'anonimo autore di questo testo, conservato in pochissime copie e datato 1675, descrive i cento senatori veneti più ragguardevoli del suo tempo (molti dei quali sarebbero poi divenuti procuratori e dogi), purificandone i profili dalle edulcorazioni dell'apparenza sociale e della piaggeria politica. Donde il valore dello scritto, che rivela una capillare, profonda conoscenza del patriziato della Serenissima, e il cui autore è probabilmente da identificarsi in Giovanni Sagredo. Costui, una delle emergenze più acute della classe senatoria, sarebbe stato eletto al dogato il 23 agosto 1676, per poi vedersi dopo un giorno e mezzo - caso unico nella storia di Venezia - annullata la nomina.
