Cet ouvrage fut couronné par l'Institut (prix Montyon). Il fut traduit en anglais. Après quelques considérations générales sur la forme et la structure des artères, Manec expose les principes généraux de la ligature des artères avec des données historiques. Les méthodes de ligature des différentes artères (carotide primitive, tronc brachio-céphalique et sous-clavière, artère axillaire, brachiale, radiale, cubitale, iliaque externe, fémorale, crurale, poplitée, etc.) est décrite dans les pages situées en regard des planches, dont elles constituent le texte explicatif. L'iconographie est constituée de 14 magnifiques planches lithographiées (lithographies de Kaeppelin), avec des éléments imprimés en couleur et rehaussés à la main, d'après des dessins de Jacob. Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), peintre et dessinateur, élève de Jacques-Louis David, s'était spécialisé dans l'illustration anatomique. Il illustra en particulier le monumental et magnifique "Traité complet de l'anatomie de l'homme" de Bourgery. Pierre Joseph Manec (1799-1884), né à Montpezat (Lot-et-Garonne), fut chef des travaux anatomiques puis chirurgien des hôpitaux de Paris. Il fut l'un des douze membres fondateurs de la Société Anatomique de Paris, lors de sa refondation par Cruveilhier en 1826. Il avait largement collaboré au Traité d'anatomie descriptive de Jules Cloquet.
