Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 14,5 x 23,5, 352 pages, 19 color & 69 b/w illustrations - This publication is based on two exhibitions held at the Migros Museum in Zurich, both of which were dedicated, in different ways, to exploring the possibilities of documenting time-based works. It aims to outline the theories that underpin these issues in discussing the various ways in which disciplines that are fixed in time, such as sculpture and installation, or technologically reproducible media, such as film and photography, relate to time-based fields of art that are performative in character, such as dance, performance and sound, in diverse combinations. The focus is on the areas created by these overlaps, and the art that is produced as a result. While Raphael Gygax posits the notion that performances, their installation venues, and the objects involved may be read as rituals, places of ritual and relics, respectively, Heike Munder considers how the body itself can serve as a potential archive of history, and how processes of movementaccording to a re-activated modernist formal syntaxcan be inscribed into a collective corporeal memory. Verena Kuni explores temporality and transience in art in connection with sound and music, and their transformation. Philip Auslander presents his long-held theory that the material documenting performances can in itself be characterized as performative in character. Based on her own artistic practice as a documenter of the Judson Dance Theater, among others, Babette Mangolte examines the relationship between movement and speed in the filming of performative processes. Kristina Köhler also examines the filmic strategies of the performative, and how these strategies oscillate between performance, event, and representation.

"The exhibition When things cast no shadow consisted of two parts one taking place by day, one by night. The daytime part of the 5th Berlin Biennale presented mainly new productions by 50 artists of four generations shown at four different venues--at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and the Schinkel Pavilion. Many of the participating artists conceptualized and built their commissioned artworks explicitly in response to the specifically designated exhibition site. Already a few weeks prior to the official opening the first in a series of five solo exhibitions (curated by artists participating in the biennial) was launched at the Schinkel Pavilion as part of the 5th Berlin Biennale. Throughout the duration of the biennial these exhibitions gave insights into ways in which younger artists deal with topics such as the legacy of previous generations, modernity or various exhibition formats." -- publisher''s statement. Fine. Two volumes, both with covers and contents clean and unmarked.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book gives a systematic presentation of real algebraic varieties. Real algebraic varieties are ubiquitous. They are the first objects encountered when learning of coordinates, then equations, but the systematic study of these objects, however elementary they may be, is formidable. This book is intended for two kinds of audiences: it accompanies the reader, familiar with algebra and geometry at the masters level, in learning the basics of this rich theory, as much as it brings to the most advanced reader many fundamental results often missing from the available literature, the 'folklore'. In particular, the introduction of topological methods of the theory to non-specialists is one of the original features of the book. The first three chapters introduce the basis and classical methods of real and complex algebraic geometry. The last three chapters each focus on one more specific aspect of real algebraic varieties. A panorama of classical knowledgeis presented, as well as major developments of the last twenty years in the topology and geometry of varieties of dimension two and three, without forgetting curves, the central subject of Hilbert's famous sixteenth problem.Various levels of exercises are given, and the solutions of many of them are provided at the end of each chapter.

Softcover. Condition: gut. 2006.
