Old New Zealand - A Tale of the Good Old Times And a Hisotry of the War in the North against the Chief Heke, in the year 1845, told by an old chief of the Ngapuhi Tribe, Also Maori Traditions by a Pakeha Maori F.E. Maning. Publisher: Whitcombe and Tombs, Auckland, 1930. Hardback with no jacket, binding firm, red cloth boards are faded, with marks and chipping, tear to spine, some foxing to end-papers and edges, corner creasing. Frederick Edward Maning (1811/12?-1883) was born in Ireland and arrived at Hokianga in 1833. He married into the local Maori tribe, acquired land, and set up as a trader. He fitted easily into the role of a rough and ready "Pakeha-Maori" - a man equally at home in both worlds. He opposed the Treaty of Waitangi when it was brought to Hokianga in 1840, partly because he felt that Maori culture and British institutions could not mix, and partly because he feared that British sovereignty would end land speculation. He also despised the English missionaries who were likely to influence the new Lieutenant-Governor, William Hobson. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. His account of the early contact period is widely acknowledged to be a masterpiece of some sort, but the extent to which it is fiction, autobiography, ethnography, history, or satire remains a matter for debate. This is the first scholarly edition of Maning's writings. It includes a revealing selection of Maning's unpublished letters, and Alex Calder contributes an introduction and notes that illuminate the works' historical, ethnographic, and literary contexts, showing how settler colonialism is an incomplete and contested process, the problems of which are enacted in Maning's writings, and repeated in the history of their reception.
