This is a promotional poster for Mann Packing Co., Inc. of Salinas, California and Lee Iacocca. The main illustration shows a celebratory scene where a smiling man and boy waves their hands toward a small rowboat on which four children are standing. The rowboat is emblazoned with "Sunny Shores" and a small broccoli emblem on the back. The four children place their right arms on their chests and look up in honor toward a monumental broccoli holding up a smiling Statue of Liberty. A smiling fish is in the foreground. The New York City skyline and several boats and two helicopters are in the background. The printed text of the poster reads, "Thank you, Mr. Mann . and you too, Mr. Iacocca! Compliments of Mann Packing Co., Inc. Growers--Packers--Shippers of California Broccoli.America's Vitamin Vegetable; Vitamin Vegetable is a registered trademark of Mann Packing Co., Inc., Salinas, Ca. 93902; Mann Packing Co., Inc. 1986." This poster was likely printed on the occasion of celebrating the work of H. W. "Cy" Mann (of Mann Packing Company) and Lee Iacocca in helping restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in New York. In 1982, Iacocca was appointed as head of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation by President Ronald Reagan. The Foundation had the express purpose of raising funds to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. While there is little available documentation about Mann's role for the restoration project, it is implied by the poster that he significantly contributed to the project's realization (hence the broccoli holding up the Statue of Liberty and the broccoli emblem on the rowboat). Signed by Dedini below the main illustration on the poster. Eldon Dedini (1921-2006) was an American cartoonist and artist whose work appeared in a number of publications such as Esquire, The New Yorker, and Playboy. Dedini was born in King County, California. He studied at Salinas Junior College and Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Lee Iacocca (1924-2019) was an American engineer, business executive, and author. He is perhaps best-known for helping design several Ford models and for working as an executive officer and pitchman for Ford and Chrysler. H. W. "Cy" Mann founded the Mann Packing Company in 1939 as a small fresh carrot packing business in Salinas. Mann's company added more vegetables to its product line and became one of the leading vegetable suppliers of the region. In 2018, Mann Packing was acquired by Del Monte and continues to operate to this day as Del Monte's Fresh Produce vegetable division. Signed by Author(s).
