No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original typed letters on beige paper with purple typed text and two signatures in black ink. Signed, "R. E. Mansfield," on both letters. Datelined May 29, 1907 and June 4, 1907 in Lucerne, Switzerland. 8" x 10." One page each, complete. Both letters have horizontal and vertical fold lines. Letters are very clean and intact. Slight wrinkling and a few small spots on the paper. Letters are Very Good. Robert E. Mansfield (1866-1925) was an American newspaper editor and consul. He served as U.S. Consul in many countries including Zanzibar from 1899-1901, Valparaiso from 1901-1906, Lucerne from 1906-1908, and Saint Gallen from 1908-1909. Mansfield went on to serve as U.S. Consul General in Zurich from 1909-1913, Vancouver from 1913-1916, and Stockholm from 1916 to about 1917. In these letters, Mansfield addresses W. G. Dyas, Esq. in Sacramento, California to discuss legal matters involving a inheritance in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the May 1907 letter, he informs Dyas that Alfred C. Tevis, American Consular Agent at Aarau, passed away on May 17. Mansfield writes about letters that were subsequently found at the Agency, namely, ones about an inheritance of Mrs. Alois Gamma and Dyas's own correspondence. He refers Dyas to Dr. L. F. Meyer, a Lucerne attorney, who will look further into the matter. In the June 1907 letter, Mansfield writes more about the legal case involving the estate of Alois Gamma. Meyer has taken over the case and his correspondence is reprinted. Meyer explains the legal process and writes about how the case is under the jurisdiction of the Canton of Uri. Most of Meyer's correspondence is about the apparent death or disappearing of Alois Gamma, Mrs. Alois Gamma's declaration of his death or disappearing, and how and if the inheritance money will be paid out. The letter concludes with Mansfield recommending Meyer as a "capable and honorable attorney" to Dyas. Signed by Author(s).
